When Photography Becomes Art

I love it when someone emails me to let me know that they have found an article I have written useful, or an aspect of my photography that they enjoy.  So when Ann contacted me with an unusual request, I was interested to see what happened.

The traditional art of quilt making, is I must admit, not something I know very much about but when Ann asked whether she could use one of my images to model her latest quilt I was intrigued to find out how one of my photographs would translate into this traditional art form.  So after a few months of waiting and wondering, the quilt has been finished and I couldn't resist sharing the outcome with those who might also wonder how a photograph can be used for inspiring a quilt.

Horseshoe Falls resized.jpg

The photograph used was an image of Horseshoe Falls in Southern Tasmania and the finished product, Ann's quilt, is an interpretation of that image.  I would like to thank Ann for sending me photographs of her beautiful quilt and also using one of my images to work from (some people may take issue with using their photographs as a basis for creating your own art - from a copyright point of view it's important to get consent to use anyones work - even if you are interpreting it into your own style).

Ian, a wonderful photo of the Horseshoe Falls.  Then Ann's quilt interpretation is incredible as well.
