June 2008 - Half way through the year - where does it go?

Hello %%First Name%%,

Well, it's been a while between newsletters and that's because there has been a lot going on! The Epson Tasmanian Professional Photography Awards, the Adobe Lightroom Adventure, preparation for Vivid 2008, plenty of Waterbabies and some personal news I will tell you about at the end of this newsletter! Don't just scroll straight to the bottom you might miss something!

2008 Epson AIPP Professional Photographer of the Year Awards

In May The Australian Institute of Professional Photography held the Epson 2008 Tasmanian Professional Photographer of the Year Awards. With a record number of images and the largest number of photographers entering, the competition was fierce! Following a whole day of judging in a couple of categories (wedding and open) we retired for an evening meal where the winner was announced. To my total surprise, it was me! I took out the Tasmanian Professional Photographer of the Year Award for 2008 and my good friend Phil Kuruvita took out the Wedding Photographer of the Year. It was a pretty cool (and sometimes nerve wracking) chance to have my images judged by some of Australia’s finest photographers.

The images are currently on display at Photoforce (Hobart) and of course in my online gallery. Although only four images can go towards the overall result – each photographer can enter a spare image (just to gauge its popularity).

My four images (plus a spare):

  1. Lava tubes – Gold
  2. Thumbs – Silver with Distinction (spare)
  3. School of fish – Silver
  4. Furry rocks – Silver
  5. Clear fell – Silver

Make sure you have a look at the images and let me know what you think...here

The Adobe Lightroom Adventure – Tasmania

In April Adobe came to Tasmania from the US! I was excited and felt extremely privileged to be involved in an international project that brought together a small group of photographers from all around the world to capture amazing images and road test the new beta version of Adobe Lightroom2. Accompanying the photographers were a bunch of Lightroom engineers and every night we received instruction on the software which we all adopted for our own workflows. As we found issues, they were ironed out by the engineers (or we were shown what we were doing wrong!)
I spent most of the two weeks in the ocean, one of my favourite places to be, and my task was to buddy Bill Stotzner (Lightroom quality engineer and good friend). We had the chance to dive some of the most amazing temperate water locations in Australia (down here in Tassie!) and now you can see why I felt so privileged!!

We took some great photographs both under water and on land and made them look even better with this amazing software. Bill and I had a blast on the adventure and we are working on a few joint projects which I will let you in on in the next newsletter. Stay tuned...

The Adobe Lightroom Adventure Tasmania will eventually turn into a book by Mikkel Aarland – who authored the Adobe Lightroom Adventure Iceland in 2006 (a great companion to Lightroom 1.4)

This software really does revolutionise RAW conversion and has a very user friendly interface. I think regardless of your level of experience in RAW conversion you should certainly have a peek at this!

Vivid

Vivid, the National Photography Festival, will be held for the first time in Canberra from 11 July to 12 October 2008. It will celebrate the vital role of photography in Australian life and history.
Over fifty National and ACT-based institutions are collaborating to present images, conferences and a range of events for photographers, photographic historians and everyone with an interest in photography.

The program of Festival events will include the projection of photographic images on to the exteriors of buildings, folio nights when Australia’s photographers will be able to show their work to buyers from Canberra’s collecting institutions, award ceremonies for both professional and amateur photographers, a trade show, master classes, seminars, talks and tours.

Waterbabies dives into Lansdowne pool!

Waterbabies popularity continues to rise and now I have found a pool in which to base myself! Lansdowne pool is located in West Hobart, although cold outside (Tasmanian winter!) the pool is always a beautiful 33 degrees! Don’t let our Tasmanian winter put you off having some beautiful and unique images taken under water. If you are looking for something totally different then a Waterbabies photoshoot will definitely appeal to you. Whether you are looking for some creative family portraits or just a fun day out with some stunning keepsakes, Waterbabies can design a package that suits you. Our Waterbabies parties are also gaining popularity, for a different spin on a traditional kids’ birthday, we can tailor an event that will keep the kids (and the adults) amused and talking about their very cool underwater birthday for years to come!
